Do you have to be a certain skill level to participate?

HAYA welcomes players of all levels to join our basketball community. Many of the players that join HAYA are reconnecting with the sport after several years of not playing and come with a wide range of experience from high school to college basketball. True beginners are welcome, but they are likely to experience a significant learning curve initially. We hope to offer clinics in the future for true beginners.

Who can play?

We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for women, those who are non-binary, trans, genderqueer, or gender non-conforming, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Is there an age requirement to play?

Age is just a number at HAYA! We're proud to offer a welcoming and supportive community for women aged 21 and above.

How do I get involved?

Currently, HAYA offers pickup runs, a league in partnership with Montgomery County Recreation, and social events.

Where do you play?

We play in Montgomery County Public Schools, predominantly in Silver Spring and Rockville, MD.

What are the pick-up games like?

Our pickup games tend to be fast-paced, with several 7-10 minute games taking place over 1.5 hrs. We do not keep score, but we love to play music!

Please arrive on time or early to allow sufficient time for you to put on your shoes and gear, and warm up.

We tend to cap the registration for open gyms to 20 people to minimize the amount of time people have to wait in between games.

What should I bring?

Please bring basketball sneakers (to prevent injury), water (the gyms can be hot in the summer), your inhaler, and any other necessary gear for playing basketball and working out. We will have women’s basketballs, so no need to bring one if you don’t have one.

What if I sign up for a pickup and am unable to attend?

If you cannot make it to a pickup run — sick kiddo or caught up at work — please cancel your registration on the Heylo app to free up a spot for someone on the waitlist. If you repeatedly sign up and fail to show up without communication, you may be prohibited from signing up in the future.
